Abstract:

This review analyses the renewed interest in industrial hemp as a sustainable agricultural commodity.

Key Findings:

  • Renewed interest in industrial hemp is in part, attributed to its sustainability potential

  • Industrial hemp is shown to have multiple beneficial characteristics like its harmony with the environment and its use as an alternative cover crop for small farmers thereby increasing biodiversity

  • Emergence of circular economies means industrial hemp’s sustainability will make it a key player in addressing the climate crisis
